The short answerKeep the day light: small studs and your everyday bangles. For the evening puja and moonrise, go traditional in red and antique gold: kadas or bangles on both wrists, statement earrings and, if you love it, a haathphool. Take hand jewellery off or keep it dry when you offer water to the moon.

Karwa Chauth is a long day. It starts with sargi before sunrise and ends with the moon, and most of the dressing up happens for the evening. Plan your jewellery the same way.

What to wear, moment by moment

Moment Wear Try
Sargi and the day Light studs, your everyday bangles Gulnaar Crystal Studs
Mehendi Nothing on the hands until it dries Earrings only
Evening puja Kadas on both wrists, statement earrings Riyasat Meenakari Kadas
Moonrise Add a haathphool for the photographs Bela Kundan-Style Haathphool
Dinner after Swap heavy earrings for lighter ones Studs or small jhumkas

Choosing colours

Red, maroon and gold are traditional, and black and red meenakari looks rich against both. If you are wearing pastel or ivory, choose crystal and pearl pieces from Roshni instead of heavy enamel.

Bangles and kadas

Glass bangles and kadas are central to the look. Pair one statement kada on each wrist with glass bangles between them, or wear a pair of Phoolkari Medallion bangles on their own. Check your size first with our 2.4 vs 2.6 bangle guide.

Comfort on a fasting day

  • Choose lighter earrings for the day; save heavier ones for a few hours in the evening.
  • Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and mehendi have dried.
  • Pin your dupatta so it does not catch on a haathphool or earrings.

Caring for festive pieces

UTSAV pieces are brass-based and hand-finished, with enamel and kundan-style stones. They are not waterproof. During the arghya, when water is offered to the moon, slip your haathphool off or keep your hands dry. Wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth afterwards and store it in its pouch. Every UTSAV piece carries a 6-month Finish Promise.

Traditionally bangles or kadas, earrings, a bindi, sindoor and often a mangalsutra, with many women adding a haathphool and payal for the evening puja.

Can I wear gold-tone jewellery instead of gold?

Red and maroon are traditional; pink, orange and gold are popular too. Match jewellery tone to the zari in your outfit.
