The short answerLohri is a winter bonfire festival, so jewellery has to work with shawls and layers. Wear bold earrings that show above a wrap and kadas or bangles at the wrist. Antique gold glows in firelight. Keep long danglers and loose dupattas well clear of the fire.

Lohri marks the end of winter in Punjab and across north India, with a bonfire, folk songs, giddha and bhangra, and plenty of til and gajak. Outfits are bright and warm: phulkari dupattas, velvet and wool.

The Lohri look

Piece Why Try
Jewelled kadas Show at the wrist below a shawl Shahi Bagh Jewelled Kadas
Medallion bangles Colourful stones echo phulkari embroidery Phoolkari Medallion bangles
Gemstone bangles Bright colour for a dark evening Rangmahal Gemstone Bangles
Statement jhumkas Visible above a high collar or wrap Kamalini Lotus Jhumkas

Styling with winter layers

  • Shawls hide necklaces, so put the jewellery at the ears and wrists.
  • Push sleeves up slightly so kadas show.
  • Velvet and wool love antique gold and coloured stones.
  • A phulkari dupatta is busy: pick one colour from it and repeat it in your stones.

Bonfire safety

  1. Pin dupattas and shawls before going near the fire.
  2. Tuck long earrings behind your hair when leaning in to offer til or rewri.
  3. Do not reach across the fire with loose sleeves or bangles.
