Wedding Guest Jewellery for Every Function: Haldi to Reception
One wedding, five looks. What to wear to each function as a guest, and how to repeat your favourite pieces across the week.
By The Priskel Studio 3 min read
The short answerGo lighter for daytime functions and build up towards the evening. Pearls and delicate pieces for haldi and mehendi, movement and colour for the sangeet, your most traditional pieces for the ceremony, and one sleek statement for the reception. Repeat earrings across functions and change the wrists and hands to create new looks.
An Indian wedding is not one event; it is a week of them. Packing a different set for every function is expensive and heavy. The smarter approach is a small wardrobe of pieces that mix in different ways.
Haldi: fresh and easy
Haldi is a daytime ceremony and turmeric gets everywhere, so wear less and keep precious pieces at home. Pearls and simple drops suit yellow outfits. The Mogra Pearl Payal, three fine pearl strands meeting at a teardrop centre, is a pretty detail with bare feet. Take jewellery off before the haldi paste is applied.
Mehendi: hands first
Your hands are the focus, so choose a haathphool and keep the earrings soft. The Chandni Moti Haathphool, with crescent moons and pearl drops, sits beautifully over a finished design. Put it on only after your mehendi is dry.
Sangeet: movement and colour
This is the night for jhumkas, ghungroo and stacked bangles. The Kamalini Lotus Jhumka Danglers sway as you dance. Our sangeet guide has full outfit pairings.
The wedding ceremony: most traditional
Wear your most traditional pieces: chandbalis or large jhumkas, kadas and a maang tikka if you like. Avoid anything that competes with the bride; deep jewel tones and antique gold are a respectful, elegant choice.
Reception: one sleek statement
Receptions lean modern. Choose one strong focal piece, such as the nine-colour Navrang Cabochon Drop Earrings, and a fine line of sparkle at the wrist like the Nazakat Baguette Bracelet.
Pack for the week, not the day: three pairs of earrings, two wrist looks and one hand piece will cover every function.

How to travel with wedding jewellery
- Keep every piece in its own pouch, inside your cabin bag.
- Pack a soft cloth to wipe pieces after each function.
- Lay out each day's jewellery with that day's outfit so nothing is forgotten.
Questions we hear often
Can a guest wear heavy jewellery to a wedding?
Yes, especially at the evening ceremony. Just keep it a step below the bride; one statement area is plenty.
What jewellery should I avoid at a haldi?
Anything you would be upset to stain. Turmeric paste and water are part of the ceremony, so wear little and remove it before the paste.
Can I wear the same earrings to every function?
You can. Change your wrists, hands and hairstyle and the look changes with them.
