The short answerTeej is about green and gold: green bangles or kadas, green-stone studs and a haathphool over fresh mehendi. Because Teej falls in the monsoon, choose lighter pieces, keep festive jewellery dry, and wear your waterproof everyday gold for the rest of the day.

Hariyali Teej celebrates the monsoon, with green outfits, mehendi, swings and songs. It is one of the most joyful festivals for dressing up, and one of the trickiest for jewellery, because it rains.

The Teej look

Piece Why Try
Bangles or kadas Green and gold is the classic Teej pairing Phoolkari Medallion bangles
Green-stone studs Light, and they will not tangle with a dupatta Sitara Asscher Halo Studs
Haathphool Frames the mehendi Chandni Moti Haathphool
Meenakari kadas Colourful enamel for the evening Riyasat Meenakari Kadas

Colours

Green is traditional: leheriya, bandhani and silk in every shade from parrot to bottle green. Antique gold with green or red stones looks rich against it. Pink, yellow and orange are popular too.

Mehendi first

Apply mehendi the day before if you can. Wait until it is fully dry and scraped off before putting on a haathphool or bangles, so nothing smudges the design.

Monsoon-proofing your jewellery

  • UTSAV pieces are brass-based and hand-finished, and not waterproof. If it is raining, wear them for the puja and photos, then switch.
  • Your Everyday gold is 100% waterproof, so it can stay on through the rain and the swings.
  • Carry a soft cloth and a pouch. If pieces get wet, pat them dry straight away.
